Jeter Wins Roberto Clemente Award

Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees has been named the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award at a press conference prior to Game Two of the 2009 World Series at Yankee Stadium. Bestowed annually, the Roberto Clemente Awardecognizes the Major League Baseball player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field. Major League Baseball has presented this Award each year since 1971. In 1973, the Award was named in honor of Clemente, who died on December 31, 1972, during a humanitarian mission to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua. ?Major League Baseball is proud to honor Derek Jeter for the lasting impact the Turn 2 Foundation has made on youth in communities across the country,? said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. Howard Enjoys 'Special' NLCS MVP Award

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard took home the NLCS MVP award on Wednesday night. Philadelphia advanced to the World Series over the Dodgers for the second straight season. "It's definitely something special," Howard said. "Right now I'm going to go celebrate, enjoy myself a little bit." Howard already has the 2005 NL Rookie of the Year and 2006 NL MVP awards on his mantle. He hit .333 (5 for 15) with two homers, one double, one triple and eight RBIs in the five-game series.

Lincecum Endorses Carpenter For Cy Young

Tim Lincecum is a Cy Young candidate again this season, but is unlikely to repeat. "I would like to see (Chris) Carpenter because of his comeback," Lincecum said. "He's put up pretty crazy numbers." Lincecum, after outdueling Dan Haren on Thursday, is 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA. His ERA is lower than last year's 2.62, and his strikeout total (261) is four fewer than last year's 265.
